We’re a close-knit, family-run college, headed by interior designer Jeremy Volkmann. Our team of lecturers are all individually known in the industry, meaning that our students get hands-on experience from working professionals.

With Architecture in his blood, our fearless leader was destined to follow his passion in design. He is not only an integral part of BHC management team, but also a fully registered and practicing Architectural Technologist.

When he is not in the Studio sharing his passion, he can be found meticulously tending his vines.

Janet Burger has a vast experience in the Interior Design space, from designing upmarket residential projects to on-site project management. Her forte’ however is problem solving and the detailing of interiors, such as ceilings, cabinetry and furniture. “God is in the details” (Mies van der Rohe). Having lectured Interior Design at CPUT, Vega and the Polytechnic in Namibia Janet Burger brings a wealth of knowledge in Higher Education in the Architectural field to her new role with us at BHC as Head of Academics . She started off by studying Architectural Technology at CPUT (3 years) following it up with an Honours Degree in Architecture at the Nelson Mandela University in the Eastern Cape.
Janet’s experience is vast, from designing upmarket residential projects to on-site project management. Her forte’ however is problem solving and the detailing of interiors, such as ceilings, cabinetry and furniture. “God is in the details” (Mies van der Rohe).
Janet loves to sense enthusiasm in the class, knowing that the information she is sharing is landing well with the students and perhaps making them view something in a completely new light.
A lover of painting, writing poetry and reading, she is also outdoorsy, and loves being in nature. Her favourite pastime is being on her SUP!

TIM RICHERT

Tim Richert is our digital guru and teaches part-time on the Digital Design Short Course. Tim owns multidisciplinary design company 5 Studio and is a co-director at Leg Studios.

Tim Richert is our digital guru and teaches part-time on the Digital Design Short Course. Tim owns multidisciplinary design company 5 Studio and is a co-director at Leg Studios. With a BTech in Industrial Design and qualifications in Interior Design, some of Tim’s favourite things include designing sets for events and music festivals, painting portraits of famous South Africans, creating mirrored rooms and much more.

CHER VAN DER MESCHT

Cher van der Mescht is a lecturer at BHC, teaching Project Administration, Preparation for employment, Materials, Decorative materials and finishes and Experiential Learning

She completed a Higher Diploma in Interior decorating and design at Potchefstroom academy in 2014 followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design majoring in interior design at University of Tasmania, Australia in 2018. Her favourite thing about being a lecturer is nurturing the students and watching their confidence grow. In her spare time Cher loves the beach, trying to surf and failing to dance.

MORGAN VOLKMANN

With her roots in early childhood education, this inspired mother of two and trail-running power house manages to find the time and energy to ensure the full compliance of BHC in all regulatory bodies.

Her sound understanding and passionate devotion to tertiary education makes Morgan a vital asset in the inner workings of BHC.

NICA MAREE

Nica assists with concept and presentation design and hopes to inspire students’ concepts to take flight. After completing her studies at BHC in 1995, Nica became part of the BHC team.

Nica has been welcomed back to BHC this year assisting with concept and presentation design and hopes to inspire students’ concepts to take flight. After completing her studies at BHC in 1995, Nica became part of the BHC team lecturing between 2003 and 2005 finally ending up as the Third-Year studio Master. Her favourite part of being involved as a Lecturer is getting insights into young, creative minds and being able to feed off their untainted energy.
Having run her own Interior design company since 1998 Nica Design is renowned for honesty, reliability, and unique creativity. This has led her to build up a loyal client base over the years which varies from corporate, retail, luxury yacht and high-end domestic briefs.
Never one to rest on her laurels, in between work, lecturing and being a mom she is also studying for her BA in psychology with the intent to practice play therapy.

LIEZL VERFUSS

Liezl Verfuss has been a BHC lecturer since 2013. As a lecturer, Liezl teaches Practical Interior Design I, Council Submission I, Sketching II and Materials I.

As a professional, Liezl specialises in renovations, alterations and council submissions.

Liezl’s favourite thing about being a lecturer is when her students have “aha” moments and when they get excited about their college work. With a love for the outdoors, you can usually find Liezl on some kind of adventure in her free time.

MARKETING & ADMISSION

TANIA BURMAN

Tania Burman has taken on the role of Marketing and Admissions Coordinator and has a passion for helping prospective students find just the right course for them!

She enjoys being creative on the design side while handling all things social media. Tania studied Fashion Design, worked in the industry for 5 years, then moved into the education sphere becoming a Lecturer at Design Academy of Fashion. After having children, this progressed into the administrative and marketing side which enabled Tania more freedom to create digitally. After hours Tania loves nothing more than to listen to real crime podcasts, take long walks and roller-skate.

A valued BHC staff member since 2012, Jaimie is passionate about curriculum development and loves enriching student's minds. In the past she has taught a range of subjects, including Diploma in Interior Design, Higher Certificate in Interior Decorating, 2D AutoCAD, Detail Design, Technical Services and Presentation and Communication. More recently, Jaimie teaches Materials II and (her favourite) Contemporary Studies.

It’s Jaimie’s personal mission to ensure every student gets a unique learning path and a supportive environment. Jaimie loves to travel, has an adorable son named Mason and a fondness for making delicious pastries.

JACO LANDMAN

Jaco Landman is a passionate designer with 10 years of experience in the industry and a project portfolio ranging from small renovations, High-end Residential, Heritage applications to corporate and hospitality.

He is excited and confident that his experience and “killer smile” will contribute to the development and professional growth of every student into young professionals ready to conquer the world. Besides lecturing he loves cooking- leaving the kitchen a total mess- Boxing and creating all things beautiful. At BHC he teaches, 2DCAD, Technical Drawing I, Digital Presentation I, Technical Services I, Council Sub I, Detail Design II & III & Materials II.

BRONWEN SMITH

Bronwen Smith, an accomplished Interior Design professional, officially joins BHC School of Design in 2024. With a diploma and BTech degree from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and a Master's Degree in Interior Architecture from the University of Hasselt,

Bronwen Smith, an accomplished Interior Design professional, officially joins BHC School of Design in 2024. With a diploma and BTech degree from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and a Master's Degree in Interior Architecture from the University of Hasselt, Bronwen brings over a decade of industry experience to the classroom.
Known for her passion for sustainability and meticulous design, Bronwen has spent years honing her skills in both corporate and residential projects. Her commitment to guiding students is evident in her joy at being part of their design journey.
Teaching Practical Interior Design II, Digital Presentation I and II, and Professional Practice I, Bronwen's classes promise a blend of practical experience and cutting-edge design principles. Beyond design, Bronwen is an avid artist, a literature enthusiast, and harbours a fascination for tiny homes, all while tending to a flourishing collection of houseplants. BHC School of Design eagerly awaits Bronwen Smith's enriching contribution to its academic and creative landscape.

Our long standing fashionista, Brenda, is always on hand with a warm greeting “Hello Darlings” and a willingness to help.

Heading up the finance department, Brenda keeps her finger on the pulse and her energy focussed on all role players and the team members alike.
