3D AutoCAD II

5 Credits

The aim of this course is to build upon the skills developed by the learner in the 2D AutoCAD I course. It is vital that a client understands the design and 3D AutoCAD enables this to be achieved: a realistic 3D impression of an interior space for the purpose of communicating the design to a client.

The focus of the course is therefore on using the software to apply 3D techniques to create a realistic feel to the design image through the use of lighting and rendering.

The final learning outcome is to endow the design with detail, creating 3D furniture and furnishings for an interior design project.

Professional Practice II

15 Credits

The aim of this course is to consider the practical procedures related to the practice of interior design. It will provide the learner with an overview of the basic legal principles related to the establishment and day-to-day workings of design contracts and design practice. It will raise the awareness of the learner to the social relevance of interior design and how design technology can be used to improve the human condition.

This course will equip the learner with the knowledge and understanding of how to take ideas through the design cycle (concept, communication and implementation). The focus will be to consider the designer’s responsibility to the community, their client and to other designers and the industry at large.

This course also aims to take the learner through the organisational structure of a business, professional and social ethics and responsibilities in a business organisation setting, with a specific focus on business management.

Practical Interior Design III

50 Credits

The aim of this course is to prepare and equip the learner for a career in the professional world of Interior Design. It will enable the learner to develop the skills, knowledge and attention to detail necessary to be successful in an interior design discipline.

The course will introduce the learner to the design development cycle (concept, communication and implementation). Learners will be instructed in the theory behind design typology and will gain practical experience through its application in design projects, resulting in a creative design solution. A methodical understanding of the design principles and elements enables the learner to develop a sound design aesthetic.

The learner will be introduced to a range of drawing media and techniques including draughting, 2D and 3D presentation drawings as well as presentation boards.

Finally, the learner will develop evaluative skills by considering the effectiveness of the design development cycle and their use of the cycle in their design approach. In particular, the evaluation will consider the value of the design solution to others and within the perspective of a commercial context.
