Sketching I

10 Credits

The aim of this course is to equip learners with the skill to comfortably draw freehand sketches, enabling them to communicate creative conceptual ideas on paper before executing a design concept.

This skill will also assist learners to illustrate their raw ideas to clients to establish if their thought process is on par with the client’s brief and expectations.

Materials I

10 Credits

The aim of this course is to introduce the learner to available products, finishes, furniture and accessories. The learner will be able to outline the characteristics of the materials, how they are produced and where and when to specify them in an interior design project.

This course will establish a basic grounding in the various finishes and products as well as keeping the learner abreast of trends and new products. Research skills will play an important part within the learner’s ability to explore materials. An understanding of the use, applications and physical qualities of materials will enable the learner to prepare detailed drawings and materials specifications to fulfil a specific design brief.

Practical Interior Design I

55 Credits

The aim of this course is to prepare and equip the learner for a career in the professional world of Interior Design. It will enable the learner to develop the skills, knowledge and attention to detail necessary to be successful in an interior design discipline.

The course will introduce the learner to the design development cycle (concept, communication and implementation). Learners will be instructed in the theory behind design typology and will gain practical experience through its application in design projects, resulting in a creative design solution. A methodical understanding of the design principles and elements enables the learner to develop a sound design aesthetic.

The learner will be introduced to a range of drawing media and techniques including draughting, 2D and 3D presentation drawings as well as presentation boards.

Finally, the learner will develop evaluative skills by considering the effectiveness of the design development cycle and then use the cycle in the design approach. In particular, the evaluation will consider the value of the design solution to others and within the perspective of a commercial context.
