Diploma Programme Admission Requirements (3 year full-time)

Application for admission

Students are accepted on a first come first serve basis and it is therefore advisable that applications to study at the BHC School of Design are submitted as early as possible.

An online application form can be downloaded from the above list or you can contact the Registrar to collect a hard copy at BHC campus, or to request a copy to sent via e-mail or fax.

Applicants will be informed of acceptance/ non-acceptance within 5 working days of the registrar receiving a completed application.

Successful applicants are required to pay a non-refundable registration fee in order to secure a position in class.

Closing date for application

The closing date for application is 1 December. NOTE: Late applications will incur an additional late registration fee.

Minimum Admission Requirements

Applicants wishing to gain access to the three year full-time Interior Design Diploma programme have to present a valid FETC (South African Grade 12 certificate), or its international equivalent.

Prospective learners are evaluated on the basis of a presentation of the prescribed portfolio and have to be a legal South African citizen or present a valid passport and student permit.

Application are required to submit a prescribed portfolio and are evaluated as soon as they are received. Applicants who submit portfolios that do not meet the minimum requirements are after consultation, are given the opportunity to resubmit or are advised to attend a bridging course.

A prospective student who has successfully completed the BHC short course in Interior Decorating and is above the age of 22, is not required to have a valid grade 12 certificate and will not have to submit the prescribed application portfolio.

Please complete the following tasks to the best of your ability and send it with your application form to

DRAWING REQUIREMENTS

Please draw the following on an A3 paper. You may use any medium for this project. Should you have a portfolio that fits the below criteria, you may send this as an alternative.

You will be expected to demonstrate the following skills:

  1. The ability to perceive depth from an interior perspective:
    Draw an interior perspective (3 dimensional drawing) of any room, e.g. Lounge, showing depth and shading.
  2. The ability to perceive depth from an exterior perspective: Draw an exterior of a two story or higher building, showing depth and shading.
  3. The ability to render: Draw a still life in colour, e.g. Flower; Fruit; Shoes etc.
  4. The ability to organise space through the use of scale and proportion: Draw a floor plan (top view) of any room or dwelling indicating windows, doors, walls, furniture and flooring.

QUESTIONNAIRE

Please answer the following questions:

  1. Name a South African interior you wish you had designed and give us a reason why you find it special.
    (Restaurant/ domestic/ office - your choice)
  2. Name your favourite International interior and give us a reason why you find it special.
    (Research in magazines or books)
  3. Which local or international designer do you admire? Explain why they impress you.
  4. Which three words would you use to describe yourself:
  5. Which three words would describe your design preferences?
  6. What three designed objects would you put in your own interior (money plays no role).
  7. What in your opinion is the difference between Interior Design and Interior Decorating?
  8. What type of products or interiors do you see yourself designing when you graduate?

Duration of Full Time Course

Each academic year consists of 4 terms. Classes are from 09h00 to 14h00. Learners are however also sometimes required to complete various assignments and presentations in the afternoons and evenings, and are encouraged to stay and work in the studio until 17h00.

Assessment

Assessment rules, academic credit accumulation, progression and qualification

Under the broad context of outcomes based education, the BHC adopts a continuous assessment approach which includes formal and practical assessment, appropriate for the vocational relevance of the programme. Assessment criteria are clearly set out and communicated to learners and all assessment outcomes are made available for verification and appeal.

June assessment will be conducted internally in a formal manner. Learners will receive written and oral feedback.

November assessment will also be formal, but with only a written report as feedback.

Assessment of exit level courses will be conducted internally and externally by field specialists and appropriately qualified individuals.

It is recommended that learners must attend 85% of classes to qualify for re-assessment.

Prospective students who do not satisfy the technical benchmark but can demonstrate comparable RPL competency may also be granted admission upon applying to the registrar. Please contact Sue Lunnon at +27 (021) 447 7288 during office hours should you wish to submit an application of RPL.

Transfer from other Institutions

Prospective students who wish to transfer from another institution are requested to contact the Registrar in order to set up an interview. They will be required to submit a complete application form and application for exemption form, in addition to a letter of recommendation from relevant institution, all previous academic transcripts and evidence of assessments completed at the previous institution.

International students

South African citizens will be given preference during the selection procedure and acceptance of international learners in subject to availability. International learners are required to submit a completed application form in addition to the following documentation:

  • Certified copy passport (Identification page)
  • Certified copy of study permit
  • Certified copies of academic transcripts, certificates or diplomas of any additional qualifications
  • Proof of residential address
  • Registration fee
  • Proof of sufficient English Literacy

Student Identity Cards

Registered student will be issued with a student identity card at the beginning of each academic year. Students will be charged a replacement fee for the replacement of any lost or damaged cards.



 

SHORT COURSE ENROLMENT REQUIREMENTS

Please refer to short course for minimum admission requirements. BHC reserves the right to cancel a course should there be an insufficient number of students booked for the course.
